Every month, we feature a traveling couple whom we admire for their sense of adventure and their zest for the world. This month, we’re showcasing two of our favorite blogging friends, Gemma & Craig from Two Scots Abroad! These two lovebirds are awesome travelers with a sense of humor and they share unique experiences on their excellent blog. But they also, like us, are newlyweds, having just tied the knot in an Austin, Texas elopement last month. Get ready to meet two fantastic folk! Meet Gemma & Craig of Two Scots Abroad
When did you first start traveling together?
Craig and I met in our late 20s so I made it clear that I was keen to travel before buying a house, starting a family etc. I’m not saying it’s impossible to travel and have a family, it just makes attending a week long music festival in Austin, Texas difficult! We kicked off our travels as a couple in 2013, spending five weeks in South East Asia, testing the water for this 18 month career break to travel the Americas and Europe!
How would you describe your travel style?
I do the planning. Craig carries the bags and looks good in photos!
What has been the most rewarding part of traveling as a couple?
Knowing that we can pretty much get through any crisis. We’ve missed flights due to hangovers, lived off £8 a day, and made it through times of hanger. You know there isn’t much you can’t handle after that! Getting hitched in Austin, Texas last month was pretty sweet too!
What has been the most challenging part of traveling as a couple?
Missing friends and some girl time. We’ve been very lucky that lots of our friends and family have joined us on parts of this trip and we’ve met extremely cool friends along the way too.
Have you ever had a fight on the road/while traveling, and how did you handle it?
All fights have been been the result of too much alcohol! It’s pretty much all forgiven by the time we consume a full English breakfast the next day.
Can you share your funniest, most humorous experience traveling together?
Craig says my face every morning… Most of our funny stories involve me falling or tripping. I fell backwards, at a really slow pace, on the bus in Vancouver, Craig just left me to slide down the step as he thought ‘I had it’. The other day (in Hungary) I tripped over my own foot and did a strange frantic pedalling action with both feet to preven myself from falling flat on my face. This movement has only ever been seen before in cartoons!
Where have you been that you would recommend as the top destination for couples travel?
Vancouver is tops for me, we rollerskated around The Sea Wall in Stanley Park for our three year anniversary. We’re not a very conventionally ‘romantic’ couple.
How long have you two been together?
Three and a half years which is doubled when you take spending every waking and sleeping minute together over the past year!
Do you think your relationship would be different if you didn’t travel?
I don’t think it would, life would still be fun and we’d still go on adventures! For the first two Octobers of our relationship Craig surprised me by whisking me off to Pitlochry in Scotland the first year and Blackpool in England the second!
How do you define love?
Letting me watch Girls on the Macbook while he watches documentaries on his tiny iPhone 5 cracked screen, with earphones! Also, meeting your match and respecting each other. Growing up and old together while supporting each other to develop, and obviously fancying each other helps!
What do you think is the glue that keeps relationships together?
Communication, space, and making each other laugh!
What advice do you have for couples considering traveling together?
Get used to being in confined spaces together (buses, hostel rooms etc), make sure that you are familiar with the drunk version of your other half, accept that you will be living off a low budget and set out what you both perceive as priorities in spending. Craig needed a lotof talking out of going to Snowbombing in Austria. It would have been incredible but it was going to cost us £1K just to get there, housed, and equipped nevermind fed and watered! One for next year…
